Many traditional crafts have dwindled in significance during the modernization of the last 40 years. The government is trying to counteract this trend by promoting certain artisanal projects.

The burgeoning tourism in Oman has fortunately led in the last few years to an increased demand for goods produced by silversmiths, weavers and potters. Carving and shipbuilding, however, can probably survive only with government assistance.
