However, the proud people and the breathtaking landscapes behind these legends are still a well-kept secret, which is well worth discovering.
On January 10, 2020, His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said Al Said died in Muscat after almost 50 years of reign. Together with our Omani friends and partners, we mourn the loss of this extraordinarily and successful mediator, promoter of the well-being of his people and extremely moral and peaceful statesman. Sultan Qaboos himself made HH Haitham bin Tariq Al Said his successor. HH Haitham took his oath on January 11 and took over as the new Sultan of Oman. The calm and level-headed former Minister of Culture announced that he would continue his reign in the spirit of his predecessor.

The security of travelers in the Sultanate of Oman is not expected to be affected by the current tensions between Iran and the United States. The World Economic Forum, based in Geneva, placed Oman in third place worldwide in terms of security in its "Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Report" 2019 - even ahead of Switzerland (fourth place). To answer these questions, the German-Omani team led by director Friedrich Klütsch spent three years tracing the amazing and mostly unknown history of Oman. Archives in Oman, Portugal, Zanzibar and China were visited, experts around the world were questioned, and key events reenacted at original locations. Wherever possible, authentic sets were used, or recreated in accordance with the advice of experts.
