On the Current Security Situation in Oman (as of June 23, 2026)

The travel advisory for the Gulf region has been lifted. Travel to Oman is once again possible. However, for security reasons, tourists should currently still avoid the Musandam exclave on the Strait of Hormuz – which is geographically separated from the rest of Oman by the Emirates – and the airport there in Khasab.

The airspace over Oman was closed only during the early days of the conflict. Due to its neutral stance as a mediator in the Middle East and the fact that there are no American or British military bases in Oman, the Sultanate itself is not a target of Iranian attacks. Nor is this expected to change in the future.

We received feedback from our travellers who were still in the country in March and April that they felt safe and that travelling in the heart of Oman was possible without any problems. Nothing has changed in this regard to date.

Note on the Strait of Hormuz

The Strait of Hormuz is so narrow that ships generally have to pass through the territorial waters of Iran and Oman. It is not possible for large tankers to pass through using only international waters. It is therefore a fact that Iran and Oman have a decisive say when it comes to the passage of ships through the Strait of Hormuz. For this reason, there have been various negotiations and attempts at regulation in the past, such as the Geneva Convention on the Law of the Sea, which was intended to facilitate peaceful passage but excluded military vessels. This agreement has been disregarded on several occasions in the past by both sides, by the US as well as by Iran. More recent is the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, which aims to regulate peaceful passage; however, it guarantees the right of passage only for states that have acceded to the Convention. The US has not acceded to the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea. Iran has signed the convention but has never ratified it. Oman has both signed and ratified it.

Intensive talks are currently taking place between Oman and Iran regarding the future regulation of transit through the Strait of Hormuz. The plan is for the southern corridor, running along the coast of Oman, to be used by ships leaving the Arabian Gulf, whilst the northern corridor, running along the coast of Iran, will be used primarily by ships entering the Gulf.
