The Dhofar region around Salalah with its long stretches of white, beautiful sandy beaches now justifiably attracts many beach holidaymakers in the winter months. At Taqah, around 30 minutes away from Salalah, several beach resorts have been built in recent years. Under the palm groves of Salalah there are small stalls selling fresh bananas, coconuts and papayas - and all just an hour's flight from Muscat.
Culture enthusiasts should allow at least three full days for sightseeing. The UNESCO World Heritage Sites with the theme of frankincense - from the ancient shipment from the picturesquely situated frankincense harbour Samharam to the city of Salalah with its frankincense souq and the ancient excavation site of Al-Baleed with its associated museum to the Wadi Dauka nature reserve, where frankincense trees still grow today - all these sights can be easily reached from Salalah.
The majestic sand dunes of the great Arabian Peninsula Rub al-Khali desert and the Shisr /Ubar archaeological sites can be reached from Salalah in around 3 hours by car. Excursions to the Rub Al Khali are an unrivalled travel experience for desert lovers. They are only recommended as guided tours with local driver-guides who are familiar with the area.Tourists who underestimate the danger must be rescued at regular intervals (a GPS device is only of very limited help if the car is stuck in the sand). If all you can see is sand, orientation quickly becomes difficult. You should also be warned against cheap providers. The Rub Al Khali is still completely undeveloped and "accidentally" driving into Saudi Arabian territory means that the journey will end in a Saudi prison.
