Mirani Fort in historic Muscat
The harbour bay of historic Muscat is flanked by the two forts Jalali and Mirani, built by the Portuguese in the 15th century. Jalali Fort is still used as a military base, but Fort Mirani has recently been opened to visitors as a tourist attraction. The fort displays works by contemporary Omani artists. The castle offers a unique view of the Sultan's Palace and the largely newly built government and administrative centre in the bay.
