The fortress of Bahla

The UNESCO has included the huge clay fortress of Bahla, Hisn Tamah, in the list of cultural monuments worthy of preservation and has spent almost 20 years extensively restoring it.

Although it is the largest fortress in the country, very little is known about its origins. What is certain is that the fortress was rebuilt and extended again and again over many centuries.

The first structures date back to pre-Islamic times, while the oldest buildings visible today, including the nearby mosque, date back to early Islamic times.

The complex visible today was probably built in the 17th century on the remains of an older Persian complex.

Hisn Tamah, its name, refers to the presumed builder Tamah. Hisn means castle.

The high foundations made of natural stone are unusual; the walls are only made of clay bricks at a height of five metres. The huge fortress forms an impressive ensemble that can be seen from afar. Inside there are countless rooms and paintings.

Bahlais surrounded by the longest city wall in the country: it stretches over 13 kilometres, was planned 600 years ago by a woman and was also built under her direction.
