Wadi Shab - gorge in the eastern Hadjar Mountains

The water has carved a spectacular gorge into the rock of the eastern Hadjar Mountains and the wadi is one of the most beautiful in the country. However, the water masses of Cyclone Ghonu in 2007 destroyed the once idyllic palm-covered wadi entrance with metre-high gravel banks. The motorway bridge, which was completed a few years ago, does its bit to spoil the first impression. In the meantime, fields are being planted and cultivated again at the entrance to the wadi, so that the shock left behind by Gonu seems to be fading.

A gravel bank dams up the water in front of the sea under the bridge to form a small lake, which you can cross for a fee in one of the small boats waiting at the car park.

Walking about half an hour into the valley, you reach the still beautiful section of the wadi, with its picturesque turquoise green pools of water between striking rock formations. The path is varied with many steps along the rocks (without railings) and requires surefootedness. After about an hour, the trail ends at water pools.
