Tolerance, understanding, coexistence - Oman's message of Islam

The exhibition "Tolerance, Understanding, Coexistence - Oman's Message of Islam" with information panels üabout living Islam in a modern Arab society is travelling through all five continents.

As a seafaring nation, Oman has been engaged in intercultural exchange with peoples from around the Indian Ocean to China for three millennia. Religious freedom is guaranteed in the Sultanate, based on a historical tradition of acceptance, understanding and peaceful coexistence between its various religious communities. The panels in this exhibition present facets of a modern Arab country and offer visitors insights into the practice of Islam in everyday life, aspects of life in Omani society and the role of women.

A documentary film by Grimme Award winner Wolfgang Ettlich on the subject of religious tolerance in Oman and facsimile prints round off the exhibition.

The exhibition was originally conceived for Germany in 2009, but was then extended to Europe and all five continents in 2014 due to the keen interest shown. It is part of an initiative by the Sultanate of Oman to promote peace and understanding and has been shown more than 130 times worldwide in over 35 countries in 28 languages; in educational institutions, museums, cultural centres, government agencies and religious institutions as well as at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris and at the UN in New York and Vienna. The project was nominated for the “UNESCO Madanjeet Singh Prize for the Promotion of Tolerance and Non-Violence 2018“.
