In 1970, medical care in the country consisted of a mission station in Muttrah and around 100 people working in the health sector. Today, with a total of 59 hospitals and 242 health centres, the population is guaranteed complete state medical care.

For Omani patients, treatment in the state medical centres is free of charge. In addition, there is a wide range of privately financed medical services, which include all conventional treatments as well as alternative practitioner treatments and traditional Chinese and Indian medicine.
The Royal Hospital in Muscat, which was opened in the 1980s, is now one of the most modern and specialised healthcare facilities in the Middle East. Treatments in the field of nuclear medicine as well as transplants and open heart surgery are part of the range of services.
As a result of consistent investment in the healthcare sector, the infant mortality rate has fallen from 118 per thousand births in 1970 to just 10, while life expectancy has risen from 49.3 to 74.22 years.

In its 2000 report, the WHO ranked Oman first in the world in terms of the efficiency of its healthcare system.
