Light summer clothing is sufficient all year round in Oman. In the winter months (November to February) in particular, however, it can cool down in the evenings, so a light jumper or jacket and a light scarf should not be missing from your luggage.

For visits to mosques do women and men have to cover themselves completely (except for hands, feet and face.) If you are planning a visit to a mosque, it is practical to wear shoes that you can easily slip out of, as these have to be taken off. If you are invited privately, it is always advisable to take your shoes off in front of the house - at the latest in front of the carpet.

At the turn of the year, it can drop to 0 degrees in the high mountains (Jebel Shams, Jebel Akhdar) - it can also get cold at night in the desert - so a warm jumper/fleece jacket/light down jacket should be in your luggage if you are travelling to these regions. The sun always is warming during the day.

For excursions into the mountains, you should think about sturdy, ankle-high footwear - for the wadis, water-suitable shoes or trekking sandals or good bathing shoes are recommended. Sturdy sandals or light trainers or trekking shoes are generally recommended, as uneven steps and rather stony alleyways are to be expected when visiting most of the fortresses, sights and markets.

For hikes in the desert or in the mountains, it is always strongly advised to wear headgear to protect you from the sun - i.e. a cap or sun hat. The sun's rays are intense even in winter.

Omanis themselves attach great importance to a well-groomed appearance, their dishdashas are always perfectly clean and pleated and they themselves are surrounded by a fragrant cloud of perfume  - even at 45 degrees in the shade  - you should also keep this in mind when putting together your travel wardrobe. In a worn trekking shirt, you can easily feel underdressed as soon as you come into contact with the locals.

Clothing for women

When choosing the correct clothing, you should respect the country's Muslim customs, i.e. pack clothing that covers the shoulders, upper arms and knees and, in the case of women, the legs completely, and the clothing should not be tight-fitting or wide-cut. Wearing a head veil like when travelling to Iran is not an issue in Oman.

We recommend that women wear shirts with light blouses or light knitwear over them, as well as three-quarter-length skirts or light fabric trousers that go at least above the knees.

The correct swimwear for women and men in natural pools in the mountain wadis and on the public beach is functional shirts and leggings. On private beaches and in the pool area of beach resorts, normal swimwear is of course sufficient, but never "topless".

Walking on the beaches in a bikini outside the hotel resort, as is often the case in Salalah, is like walking completely unclothed through a pedestrian zone in a German city centre for the locals - absolutely inappropriate!

Lightweight scarves or shawls are practical because they can be used both as protection from the sun and from drafts caused by air conditioning set too cold.

Clothing for men

For men, summer shirts and light fabric pants are the appropriate attire. As with women, shoulders, upper arms, and knees should always be covered. Due to the heat, loose-fitting clothing with a high natural fiber content and light colors is more comfortable and protects against the sun. Lightweight scarves are practical, as they can be used both as protection from the sun and from drafts caused by air conditioning set too cold.

The correct swimwear for women and men in natural pools in mountain wadis and on the public beach are functional shirts and leggings.

Normal swimwear is of course sufficient on private beaches and in the pool area of beach resorts.
