Whales and dolphins in Oman

To date, 20 different species of whale have been spotted in the waters of Oman. However, it is rare to see a whale from the beach. Dolphins, on the other hand, are regular companions of fishing and excursion boats.

Of the approximately 80 known whale species, around 20 have been seen in the waters of Oman. While some of them are native to the Indian Ocean, others only appear at certain times of the year. The sperm whale and the humpback whale are probably the most frequently seen. To see a whale, you have to have a lot of luck and patience and travel far out to sea by boat. It is rare to see a whale from the beach.

Dolphins, on the other hand, are more likely to be seen, especially in the south of Oman, on the long coastal beaches, where you should let your gaze glide over the sea from time to time. However, they are regular companions of the fishing and excursion boats on the Musandam peninsula and off the coast of Muscat.
