Oman is a diverse country. Mountains up to 3000 metres above sea level, long beaches and picture-book sandy beaches lie close together. This trip combines the different landscapes. We explore the mighty Hajar Mountains, cross the sandy sands of Ramlat al-Wahiba and Rub al-Khali, have time for an afternoon by the sea and finally visit the remote exclave of Musandam, which extends far into the Strait of Hormuz.
Short, not too strenuous hikes break up the programme again and again. On the way, you will always make contact with the hospitable and warm-hearted Omanis, who are also very reserved and tolerant towards visitors.

Requirements:
No special physical condition necessary, but good physical condition for piste and dune runs. Assistance with camp chores such as pitching tents, preparing food and washing up is required.

Departure in the evening from Frankfurt (via Dubai or Abu Dhabi) to Muscat, where we arrive in the morning at around 9.45 am. Transfer to the hotel. In the afternoon, visit to the souq and the old town with the Sultan's Palace.
In the morning, we visit the old town with the Sultan's Palace and the Grand Mosque before travelling along the coast towards the south-east. We drive up a steep mountain track to the high plateau of the eastern Hajar Mountains, where we reach mysterious 5000-year-old tombs. We then explore the green Wadi Bani Khalid on the south side of the mountains, where we can even take a dip in the clear rock pools. At Mintirib, we head to the Ramlat al-Wahiba sand desert, which we cross completely from north to south and spend two nights in its dunes.
At the southern edge of the Wahiba we meet the Indian Ocean and can rinse off the desert sand. We then follow the east coast towards the south. Destinations en route include Sharbithat beach and the canyon of Shuwaymiyah. This remote and rarely visited valley is one of the most beautiful in the country, so we take our time here for a short hike. We continue along the coast on a spectacular new road, visiting Taqah and the historic incense harbour of Samhuram on the way. In the afternoon of day 8 we reach Salalah, the capital of the frankincense region of Dhofar. A full day here is free for swimming or walking on the sandy beach.
About Shisr – an important incense caravan site where the legendary Ubar is said to have been unearthed – we head into the dunes of the Rub al-Khali, the largest contiguous sand desert on earth. We spend four days in this fascinating landscape, and there is always time to climb one of the mighty dunes and enjoy the silence and solitude. On the evening of day 14, we reach Nizwa, the old capital of Oman, where we spend two nights in a hotel.
In the morning we visit the Souq Nizwas. Those who wish also have the opportunity to visit the mighty fortress. The rest of the day is free to explore on your own or to relax. The journey continues westwards to Bahla with its quaint souq, to the palace of Jabrin, probably the most beautiful fort in the country, and to the high plateau of Jebel Shams, the highest mountain in the country at 3000 metres. Deep below us lies the Wadi Nakhar, the „Grand Canyon“ of Oman.
The next day we visit the mountain village of Misfah before travelling over a spectacular pass to the north side of the mountains to Wadi Bani Awf.
We quickly cross the densely populated Batinah coastal plain on the new motorway. At Hatta we cross the border to the United Arab Emirates, which we drive through to the north. After Ras al-Khaimah we cross the border to Oman again. The next day we board a dhow. During our journey through the Khor Shimm, the largest and most spectacular of Musandam's fjords, we have plenty of time for swimming and snorkelling, and with a bit of luck we may even spot dolphins. In the harbour of Khasab, we observe the hustle and bustle of Iranian smugglers before exploring Musandam's highest mountain, Jebel Harim. We spend the night at the hotel in Khasab.
We cross the Oman-Emirati border one last time and reach the lively metropolis of Dubai in the early afternoon. We visit the interestingly designed Dubai Museum and, of course, the souq. The next morning, transfer to the airport and flight back to Germany, arriving around midday on day 22.
