Masirah Island is the largest island off the coast of Oman. It is located just south of Ras al-Hadd, the easternmost point of the country.
This largest island in Oman lies around twelve kilometres off the eastern coast of Oman. It is around 90 kilometres long and 14 kilometres wide, it is barren and partly rocky. The island can be easily reached by ferry from Shannah.
Kilometres of secluded beaches invite you to take long walks on the beach and observe nature in great tranquillity. Between November and December, many migratory birds breed on the island; whales and dolphins can often be observed off the coast during the same period. The coral reefs at the south end of the island provide food and shelter for a variety of fish, and sea turtles lay their eggs on the beaches.
10,000 people currently live on the island, mainly in the main town of Hilf, where the jetty is also located. They earn their living mainly from fishing, some are also employed at the airbase on the island. Tourism is of little importance;
The island's exposed location in the wind current of the Indian Ocean attracts kite surfers in summer.
