The eastern Hadjar Mountains

> Muscat   > Batinah   >western Hajar Mountains   >Sharqiyya   > Central-Oman   >Dhofar   > Musandam

The eastern Hadjar Mountains do not reach the height of the western part. Nevertheless, its landscape is unique. Deep in its gorges are wadis that carry water all year round. Among the most beautiful are Wadi Shab, Wadi Tiwi and Wadi Bani Khalid.

The rugged cliffs of Jebel Aswad, the "black mountain", are home to one of the least known and researched mammals in the world, the Arab tahr, a half-goat.

On the northern edge of the mountains lies the old port city of Sur, once one of the country's most important ports and still the centre of shipbuilding in Oman.

About 20 years ago, a pilot discovered tombs up to eight metres high on the high plateau of Jebel Bani Djabir. They are said to be five thousand years old.
