The journey now begins in Salalah, then heads north through the Rub al-Khali, where there is plenty of time for hiking. This finally fulfils the wish of many for a three-week tour with desert and hikes.

Requirements:
A medium level of fitness is required for the hikes and a good physical condition for trips on the piste and downhill runs. Help with camp chores such as pitching tents, preparing food and washing up is required.

Departure in the evening from Munich (Frankfurt on request) to Muscat, onward flight from Muscat to Salalah the next morning. Welcome by the tour guide and transfer to a small hotel directly on the beach. The rest of the day is at leisure. The first few days of this tour are also used for acclimatisation and familiarisation so that you can relax before the actual trip.
We go on two day trips: To the east of Salalah, we visit Taqah and the historic incense harbour of Samhuram as well as the large Wadi Darbat. In the west, we head to Mughsayl with its fountains and Jebel Qamar, from where we have a beautiful view over bizarre desert landscapes and the sea.
About Shisr – an important incense caravan site where the legendary Ubar is said to have been unearthed – we head into the dunes of the Rub al-Khali, the largest contiguous sand desert on earth. We spend four nights in this fascinating landscape, and there is always time to climb one of the mighty dunes and enjoy the silence and solitude.
After a stop in Haima to stock up on supplies, we cross the Jiddat al-Harasis and reach the sea at Duqm. A little further north we pitch our tents on the beach at Khaluf. We follow the coast north-eastwards along a sandy road to Sur. A visit to the dhow shipyards is of course a must, even if they are now only being repaired. We spend the night in the hotel and those who wish can go on an evening excursion to the turtle beach at Ras al-Jinz, where you can watch sea turtles laying their eggs (can be booked through the hotel in Sur).
In Wadi Shab, we undertake a three-hour hike, at the end of which we can even take a dip (somewhat difficult path in places, but without many metres of altitude). A steep mountain track takes us up to the high plateau of the eastern Hajar Mountains, where we reach mysterious 5000-year-old burial tombs. We then explore the green Wadi Bani Khalid on the south side of the mountains, where we can take another dip in the clear rock pools. At Mintirib, we head to the Ramlat al-Wahiba sand desert, where we spend the night in the dunes.
A colourful market by and for women takes place in Ibra on Wednesday mornings. The town is very lively on market day as Bedouins from the surrounding area come together, making it interesting for the male participants too. In the afternoon, we visit some of the oasis villages in the area, such as Mudayrib. The Bedouin market in Sinaw is always a highlight of the trip, as there is hardly any other market in Oman that is so lively and authentic at the same time. We continue to the Inner Oman region around Nizwa, where we spend two nights in a hotel. The famous Friday market in Nizwa will probably seem very touristy to us, but it is very nice for taking photos due to its vastness. We then head up to the high plateau of Jebel Akhdar, which until recently was a restricted military area. The steep slopes at 2000 metres above sea level are surrounded by green terraced fields, and we hike from village to village (duration approx. 2 hours, approx. 200 metres altitude).
In Jabrin, we visit perhaps the most beautiful fort in the country, followed by the largest and most impressive in Bahla. In the afternoon we visit the Wadi Dham with a short hike (duration approx. 2 hours), where we may even be able to take a dip, before camping at the Al-Ayn mountains. On day 17, we head to the high plateau of Jebel Shams, the highest mountain in the country at 3000 metres. Deep below us lies the Wadi Nakhar, the „Grand Canyon“ of Oman. At the edge of the precipice we undertake a 3-4 hour hike (approx. 250 metres up and down). In Wadi Nakhar we also hike along the narrow valley with its steep cliffs. We then head to the small but very lovingly decorated museum in al-Hamra before hiking through the palm grove and gardens of the mountain village of Misfah for just under 2 hours in the afternoon. We reach the north side of the mountains via a steep pass at over 2000 metres with fantastic views. With the gorge-like Wadi Bani Awf and a short hike through the village of Balad Seet, we experience another scenic highlight. After a detour into Wadi Abiyadh to the white pools and a visit to the fort of Nakhl, including the hot springs, we finally reach the capital Muscat.
We go on a short hike in Mutrah (approx. 2 hours, approx. 150 metres in altitude) and visit the souq. The last afternoon is at leisure. Transfer to the airport on the morning of day 22 and flight back to Germany.
