The state religion in Oman is Islam. The majority of the population belongs to the common Ibadiyah, a branch of Islam that is little recognised by the West: "Violence and intolerance do not correspond to the essence of Islam." Here, Sultan Qaboos not only expressed his personal opinion, but also represents the mindset of the Ibadiyah in general.

Islam is the link between the various groups in the country and ensures cultural identity even in times of great change.

Islam has developed its own form in Oman - the Ibadiyah. This school of law from the year 700,to which the majority of Omanis subscribe, is democratic in its basic tenets and characterised by great peaceableness.

In Oman's mosques, Ibadis, Sunnis, and Shiites all gather together for communal prayer.

Another characteristic of Islam in Oman is its commitment to openness and tolerance towards other religions. There are also Christian and Protestant churches in Oman, as well as temples for Hindus and Buddhists.
