Terraced fields on steep slopes, magnificent canyons and gorges, idyllic mountain villages, imposing fortresses and palaces - the area around Nizwa and Bahla and the region of the Jebel Akhdar massif should not be missing from any travel itinerary.
The flanks of the 3000 metre high western Hadjar Mountains formed an impregnable natural fortress. Here the people were safe from attacks by invaders coming across the sea.
Those who want to explore it today can follow the well-marked trekking trails to breathtaking viewpoints at dizzying heights on Jebel Akhdar or Jebel Shams. If you want a more comfortable option, you can also climb the heights by car (off-road vehicle!).
There are some easier trekking shelters on the Jebel Shams - the region around the canyon rim is very sparsely populated.
There are now several hotels on Jebel Akdhar and the region is accessible with a continuous (steep, only accessible by off-road vehicle!) tarred road.
At the foot of the mountains, the towns of Nizwa, Jabreen and Bahla developed into cultural centres, and for centuries they were even provincial capitals.
