Peace policy as foreign policy

The consistent adherence to a position of neutrality and the constant endeavours to defuse conflicts in the region, but also at home, have now more than paid off. While the rest of the Arab world seems to be sinking more and more into chaos, Oman is still a haven of peace and stability.

Oman's foreign policy is aimed at good neighbourly relations, non-interference in the internal affairs of other states and the recognition of international laws and customs. As a non-aligned state, the Sultanate endeavours to use its opportunities to maintain peace. For example, Saudi Arabia and Iran resumed their interrupted diplomatic relations after a meeting arranged by Oman in Muscat in 1990.
Besides Sudan, Oman was also the only Islamic state that did not break off diplomatic relations with Egypt after the Camp David peace treaty between Israel and Egypt. In January 1996, representatives of Oman and Israel signed an agreement to establish trade missions in Muscat and Tel Aviv to develop relations between the two countries. However, due to the negative developments following the death of Rabin, Oman decided in 2000 to freeze relations with Israel until Israel made a sincere effort to continue the peace process.
On the terrorist attacks of 11 September 2001 A few days later, Sultan Qaboos commented on the terrorist attacks of 11 September 2001 as follows: "We support international measures to combat terrorism if they do not endanger individual nations and are not the cause of innocent people - in any Arab or Islamic country - having to pay for actions they have nothing to do with.
Under the leadership of Sultan Qaboos (and still today under his successor Sultan Haitham), Oman's diplomats were deployed worldwide to mediate in international crisis situations involving Arabs or Muslims.
The most significant success of Omani secret diplomacy to date in terms of conflict resolution is certainly the rapprochement between the United States of America and Iran in the conflict over the uranium enrichment facilities at the beginning of April 2015 - which Donald Trump unilaterally cancelled in 2018.

Currently, Omani diplomats are once again working very hard in the background, away from the media, to mediate between the conflicting parties in the region.
