The Sharqiyya region lies on the foothills of the eastern Hadjar Mountains. Close to the easternmost point of Oman and the Arabian Peninsula, near Ras al-Hadd, lies the Ras al-Djinz marine turtle sanctuary. The landscape is dominated by the sand dunes of the Wahiba desert.
In the west of Sharqiyya lies the Wahiba desert. Its inhabitants breed racing camels, which are famous throughout the Arabian Peninsula. In the south, the dunes of the desert reach as far as the Indian Ocean, while in the north the regular floods of the Wadi Batha prevent it from spreading. The caravan route from Sur to Muscat through the small towns of al-Kamil, Ibra and al-Mudayrib once ran along the edge of the dunes.
The nature reserve of Ras al-Djinz is located close to Ras al-Hadd. This is the most easterly point in the country, as the coastline at Ras al-Hadd and Ras al-Djinz extends furthest eastwards into the Indian Ocean. Here, especially in the summer months, sea turtles can be observed laying their eggs on the beach.
The Sharqiyya region is home to the largest island in the country, Masirah Island. The island is located around 200 kilometres south of Ras al-Hadd.
