Oman's art scene has undergone rapid development over the past two decades, leading to its first participation in the Venice Biennale in 2022.
These two galleries in Muscat are particularly noteworthy:
The STAL Gallery in Muscat is currently the most important gallery for contemporary art in the Sultanate. It represents the country's most significant artists, who were also represented at the Biennale, but also focuses on promoting young talent. The gallery offers a good insight into the work of local artists. The website https://www.stalgallery.com/ not only showcases works by Omani artists, but also offers them for sale. In addition, the gallery regularly hosts guest exhibitions by renowned contemporary Arab artists.
The Ghalya's Museum of Modern Art - Place and People Museum is located in the district of Muttrah. This small private museum is located directly below the fortress of Muttrah, a short distance south-east of the souq on the Corniche.
The small, labyrinthine house displays a wealth of art and everyday artefacts. Noteworthy are, among other things, some high-quality paintings that decorate the rooms of the apparently art-loving family. At the rear of the building complex is an art gallery where contemporary Omani art is displayed and sold.
