Oman's education system

Sultan Qaboos‘'s first priority after taking office in 1970 was to combat illiteracy, as there were only three schools in the entire country at the time. He gave the clear instruction that as many children as possible should be taught, even if only in the shade of a tree. In the first 5 months of his reign, 16 state primary schools were set up in which girls were also taught for the first time.
Just five years later, there were already 262 schools, including secondary schools and an institute for teacher training. The school and education system has continued to expand ever since. Transport to school is also provided for children from remote areas - by helicopter if necessary. Since the 1980s, there have also been various schools and training centres for people with disabilities.

From the original three boys' schools, there are now over 1,500 institutions where boys and girls are taught. The education system is generally modelled on the English school system and German vocational schools. There are also Koran schools, adult education centres and technical colleges.

In 1986, the first university was finally opened, Sultan Qaboos University. It was the only university in the country until 2000. Since then, private universities have also opened in Muscat, Sohar, Nizwa and Salalah. Today, there are also a number of state and private colleges and universities of applied sciences.
