The harbour bay of historic Muscat is flanked by the two forts Jalali and Mirani, which were built by the Portuguese in the 15th century. Jalali Fort is still used as a military base, but Mirani Fort was recently opened to visitors as a tourist attraction.
Works by contemporary Omani artists are exhibited in the fort. The castle offers a unique view of the Sultan's Palace and the government and administrative centre, which has been largely rebuilt in the bay.
