The Omani constitution establishes Islam as the state religion and Islamic Sharia law as the basis for legislation. Legislation, particularly in the area of personal status and family law, is in line with Sharia law. With regard to criminal law and penalties, however, it is also based on conformity with international laws.
The Sultanate has signed laws adopted by the UN, in particular those related to the protection of human rights, the protection of minorities, as well as the conventions against all forms of discrimination against women and the protection of the rights of the child.
The rule of law, the sovereignty of the rule of law and the independence of the judiciary are among the most important principles established to protect the rights of each and every Omani citizen. Every defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty through a legal process. The use of physical and/or psychological abuse is prohibited. All punishments must be in accordance with the law, before which all citizens are equal.
