Silversmithing in Oman - jewellery for women, the khandjar for men

Archologists believe that silver came to Oman as early as the 3rd millennium BC via maritime trade as a means of payment, and with the precious metal came the art of silversmithing.

Over the centuries, Omani silversmiths developed into true masters in the processing of the precious metal, especially in Nizwa.

For women, rings were made for the ears, nose, fingers and toes, bracelets and anklets, necklaces and jewellery for the hair. Men attached great importance to decorating their swords and daggers, the khandjar.

Silver was often used as financial security because of its value. As women were safe even in times of war (robbery was taboo), silver was invested in the form of jewellery for the wife. The feared "evil eye" was supposed to be warded off by magical powers attributed to the precious metal. In addition, silver increased prestige and reputation as a sign of prosperity.
