Islam actually allows believers of other monotheistic religions to visit a mosque for worship purposes. However, as tourists do not usually visit mosques for spiritual reasons but out of curiosity, they are not welcome in Islamic places of worship. Onlookers disturb the worship of every believer; usually a sign »for muslims only« clearly indicates this restriction.
The only exceptions so far are the Qaboos Mosques in Muscat, Nizwa, Salalah and Sohar as well as the Mohammed Al Ameen Mosque in Muscat. These mosques can be visited by non-Muslims every day except Friday mornings from 8 am to 11 am.
► When visiting, please note that both men and women must be fully clothed from the ankles to the wrists. It is practical to wear open sandals that are easy to slip out of, as shoes must be removed before entering the prayer hall. Women must also cover their hair, including their neck, with a scarf. Children under the age of 10 are not permitted to visit a mosque.
