Weaving in Oman

In Oman, it was mainly consumer goods such as saddle cloths, bags and blankets that were produced. In the desert, the goods are made by women; in the mountains, the men do the manufacturing.

Despite its proximity to Persia, no carpets were knotted in Oman, as one might expect. They mainly produced everyday items such as saddlecloths, bags and blankets.

The rough goat hair used was dyed with plant fibres. In the mountains of the Jebel Akhdar massif, it is the men who today mainly produce goods for tourism.

In the Wahiba forest, on the other hand, women make colourful key rings and small carpets from wool, which is now chemically dyed.
The products of silk weavers, which can still be found in a few places, are very expensive. They use silk threads imported from India and produce the fabric for the sultan's turban, for example, or wide shawls that are worn as belts on festive days.
