Every historic town has its own market area (souq). Especially on Friday mornings, this is where the biggest hustle and bustle takes place.
It's worth buying teas, spices, handicrafts, natural cosmetics, books, clothes or jewellery at one of the weekly markets to buy authentic souvenirs that support the local traders, lose the role of spectator and maybe even get into conversation.
Please take particular care when visiting the markets not to take photographs of locals, especially women, without express permission.
Foreign visitors should also dress modestly, i.e. no skin-tight clothing and little bare skin. Incidentally, this applies to both genders.
The weekly markets mainly offer home-made products or home-grown vegetables and fruit.
