The rich treasure trove of traditional music, old songs and dances has been systematically recorded and scientifically documented at the Oman Centre for Traditional Music since 1984.
Oman's long tradition as a seafaring nation is reflected in the diversity of the country's music. Influences from Africa, India and Iran are inescapable. There are songs for special festive occasions, songs of seafarers, fishermen, Bedouins and mountain farmers. The rich treasure trove of traditional music, old songs and dances has been systematically recorded and scientifically documented at the Oman Centre for Traditional Music since 1984. In 2002, this globally unique documentation centre was honoured by UNESCO.
A very good CD with recordings of various traditional music can be obtained from the Oman Shop on the Internet. There is also a CD of Omani singers, who are known in the Gulf region for their self-composed songs.
