Ceramic handicrafts - Pottery in Oman

The area around Bahla in northern Oman is still the centre of ceramics craftsmanship in Oman today, as there are large deposits of good-quality earthenware there.

Many household items were made in the past: huge storage jugs for dates or rice, water jugs, oil lamps, drinking bowls and, of course, incense burners, of which there are several in every household. Bahla is known for its beige clay, while Al Hamra has red clay, which gave the city its name (Al Hamra = the red one)
Until a few years ago, the potteries in Bahla still worked with foot-operated turntables and the goods were fired in large, wood-fired kilns. Today, the pot discs are electric and the clay kilns are now used for storage - firing is of course carried out in modern electric kilns.

The demand for traditional Omani pottery has increased in recent years - thanks to the curiosity of tourists and a return to traditional craftsmanship among the locals. Large storage pots and water carafes are beautiful pieces of jewellery for the home and garden. Handmade ceramic crockery is now even used in some restaurants. This opens up a new market for ceramicists.
In the south of Oman, in Dhofar, pottery is also made.

The clay deposits in the south are of coarse quality and are not suitable for throwing. For this reason, the vessels here are not turned but built up, i.e. assembled from rolled-out plates. The classic incense burner from the south is therefore not round, but square. In the south, it is more likely to be women who practise this craft, in the north it is more likely to be men.
