Religious freedom in Oman

Today, a large number of followers of different religions live in Oman, and the state allows them to practise their religion freely. Religious freedom prevails. Missionary activities are generally prohibited for all religious communities, including Islamic ones.

Members of other religions, such as Jews, Christians, Hindus and others, have always lived in Oman. Due to the principle of religious tolerance, their presence was accepted and they were not subjected to any discrimination based on their religious affiliation, even during the times of the religious state, the Imamate, in the past centuries.

There are numerous Christian churches of various orientations, most of them in Muscat and Salalah, but also some temples for Hindus and Buddhists.

Since 2010, the Omani government has been actively promoting peaceful coexistence between religions and cultures with its traveling exhibition “Tolerance, Understanding, Coexistence – Oman's Message of Islam,” which has been shown in over 35 countries to date.
