Weather and best time to visit

Oman's climate offers many surprises. The best time for Europeans to visit is in winter, when temperatures are pleasantly warm at 25 to 30°C. However, it can snow in December/January in the high mountain regions, especially on Jebel Schams and Jabal Akhdar. The snow does not usually stay on the ground for long, though. Normal winter temperatures in the mountains are around 15°C.

Rainfall is rare and usually very limited to specific regions and of short duration, but often very heavy. This can lead to short-term road closures due to flooding from the runoff.

Under no circumstances should you drive into the wadis in critical weather conditions. If in doubt, always ask locals beforehand whether the weather will remain stable.

During the summer months, humidity on the coast rises rapidly due to the onset of the monsoon in the Indian Ocean, and temperatures can reach 50°C in the shade.

The best time to travel for Europeans is therefore from September to early May.

However, the inhabitants of neighbouring countries prefer to holiday on the coast of South Oman during the summer months, when it is shrouded in thick fog and light drizzle with a maximum temperature of around 30°C.
