The fortress of Nizwa

The fortress of Nizwa consists mainly of a striking defence tower with a gigantic diameter and enormous fortifications, from whose plateau you can enjoy a wonderful view of the city centre of Nizwa with its beautifully designed mosque dome through loopholes.

The huge tower was built in the 17th century by Iman Sutlan Bin Saif Al Ya´rubi and is about half filled with stones and earth to form a raised platform on which 23 cannons were positioned. The sophisticated zigzag staircase, which was equipped with several false doors and traps in case enemies penetrated the fortress, corresponded to the state of the art in defence technology at the time.

In the adjoining buildings, the former prison, there is an interesting and vividly designed museum that explains the rich history, culture and tradition of the region in an entertaining way with exhibits, display boards and short films.

Due to the popular Friday market, the number of visitors is particularly high on Fridays. Traditional cooking and folkloric dance and music performances are presented in the inner courtyard, and artefacts and handicrafts are offered for sale in changing art exhibitions. Admission OMR 5.
